Word to the Wise
Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - Tuesday in the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Kings 17:7-16 and Matthew 5:13-16]You are the salt of the earth.....You are the light of the world.....
The Sermon on the Mount continues with its vivid teaching! The first of the two images is one that has found its way into our vocabulary when we are trying to describe people whose generosity and trustworthiness have been proven time and time again. For me there is one set of faces that always comes to mind when I hear the expression, "salt of the earth." Those faces belong to Blanche and Rene Provost. They were parishioners of mine at the University of Arizona. Of French-Canadian descent, they had moved to Arizona from Connecticut for the health of one of their children. Blanche waged a long battle with cancer. She was beloved of the students. Our Eucharistic Ministers "stood in line" for the privilege of taking her communion when her illness made it impossible for her to walk to Mass anymore. I always went on Saturday morning, brought communion to Blanche and then had breakfast with Rene! Although they did not have a college education, their wisdom and faith were a constant "salt" and "light" for me. They will remain in my "hall of saints." Today it might be worthwhile to think about people like Blanche and Rene in our lives. Who are they? In what ways do we try to emulate their example? And most of all, how grateful to God are we for the gift of those persons in our lives? AMEN
