Word to the Wise
Thursday, August 26, 2010 - Thursday in the Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Corinthians 1:1-9 and Matthew 24:42-51]God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. [1 Cor.] Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household.....? [Matt]
Most of us have heard (or delivered) a talk that could be entitled, "If the shoe fits, wear it!" Sometimes the purpose of the talk is to forestall troubles, sometimes it is for the purpose of getting unknown culprits to own up to their behavior! Of course, it helps if there is some affirmation about good behavior before the problems are addressed! Perhaps we could look at the two scriptures for today in that light. St. Paul offers us some very affirming words (he'll deal with troubles later in the letter) and then Jesus challenges us to ask ourselves if we are one of those "faithful and prudent servants," or a "wicked servant?" Both Jesus and Paul at various times stress the necessity of maintaining a level of living, a kind of "staying in shape," that will keep us in a state of readiness for the Lord's coming, yes, but also for meeting the various daily demands of Christian life. If we get lazy or sloppy or negligent, it's like diet and other matters of health. We have only ourselves to blame if we get "out of shape" or sick or obese or whatever...... In effect, Jesus is asking us to take a look at our "regime" and determine if we're "in shape." If the shoe fits, wear it! AMEN
