Word to the Wise
Saturday, October 16, 2010 - Saturday in the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time
[Ephesians 1:15-23 and Luke 12:8-12]Hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and of your love for all the holy ones, I do not cease giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call......[Ephesians]
One of the most sacred duties I have is to pray for others. Although the events (and the e-mails) give me ample reasons each day all during the day, I have one particular period when I pray for a long list of folks. That's when I go for my daily walk and say the rosary. It takes me about a half hour to get through that rosary. Each mystery has certain people connected to it and my memory requires that I say the names in a particular order if I'm to remember them all! This list of folks is more or less permanent (names are occasionally added, but never dropped), but I do include what one might call the "temporary" intentions - the particular things that someone in the list might ask for at a given time. I tell them that I put an * (asterisk) by their name to remind me there's something special they want me to mention. This prayer has more than one purpose. The words of St. Paul, quoted above, are descriptive. I need to give thanks for all those who accompany me in my life by their love, support, friendship and prayers. The rosary helps me to remember them and be thankful. It is a way of communicating! Another reason is that I do wish for them that "spirit of wisdom and revelation" that results in the knowledge of God and that their hearts be enlightened to know the hope that belongs to God's call. St. Thomas Aquinas reminds me that the essence of friendship is in desiring the best for the beloved! This "rosary walk" usually takes place after I do this daily preaching, so I had better do what I say I do! AMEN
