Word to the Wise
Saturday, December 3, 2011 - 1st Week of Advent - Sat
[Isa 30:19-21, 23-26 and Matt 9:35-10:1, 5a, 6-8,266]The Lord will give you the bread you need and the water for which you thirst. No longer will your Teacher hide himself, but with your own eyes you shall see your Teacher, while from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears: "This is the way; walk in it." when you would turn to the right or to the left. [Isaiah]
The tone of longing and anticipation that we experience in the Advent scriptures from Isaiah is clear in today's passage. Two important things are mentioned: nourishment and wisdom! These are things that our world seems to be starved for in our own time. Vast numbers of people lack food. The pictures in the various news media are so graphic that one has a hard time looking at them. The same is true for wisdom. Why would human beings continually seek to destroy one another in war and violence?
If we look at the two scourges of hunger and war, we will often find political causes. Experts tell us that the whole world could be adequately fed if varous governments or movements within countries would simply open their borders and allow the food to be delivered! The desire for power fuels the violence that continually plagues those nations that can least afford it.
In this season of longing and anticipation, I hope we can each (and collectively) listen to the Teacher we have been sent and walk in the way he has given to us. Nourishment and wisdom will then replace hunger and violence as a way of life. AMEN
