SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2011 SEVENTH DAY IN THE OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS
[1 John 2:18-21 and John 1:1-18]
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
The Gospel of John was the last to be put into writing and it shows that the community had been doing a lot of reflection about the identity and origins of Jesus. There is no "infancy narrative" like we have in Luke and Matthew. John goes back to Genesis which starts with the same words, "In the beginning..." This is a different way of looking at Jesus! Jesus becomes "timeless" and like Wisdom in the Old Testament. This Wisdom "was made flesh and dwelt amongst us..."
The "prologue" is like the overture to an opera. It contains many of the themes that the reader will find in meditating on the Gospel of John. There are so many lines that we could pause on! For today, just before beginning a New Year, I call attention to the lines: "But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God!" That would make a wonderful New Year's resolution! AMEN
