Word to the Wise
Saturday, June 23, 2012 - Saturday in the 11th Week in Ordinary Time
[2 Chr 24:17-25 and Matt 6:24-34]Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
When I was a college student, oh so many years ago, MAD magazine was a very popular publication on campus. And one of the most popular characters in that magazine was "Alfred E. Neumann." His image was often accompanied by the words, "What? Me? Worry?" His motto was often quoted with a nervous laugh during final exams! In the words quoted from today's gospel scripture, I have a much higher authority telling me not to worry!
Age does bring a certain perspective to life that can reduce certain types of "worry," but it brings others as well. Health becomes a prominent topic of conversation, what one close friend of mine calls "the organ recital." Concerns about financial resources, especially in the difficult economic times we are going through at present, can cause a lot of worry. Parents worry about their children (especially about the adult recent graduates who have just moved back home!). Children worry about their parents (who now live a lot longer and need care).
I know I should read this passage more often, now that I am the "prior" of my local Dominican community in Houston! The concluding lines of the gospel for today say, "Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil!" Sigh! AMEN
