Word to the Wise

[1 John 2:29-3:6 and John 1:29-34]Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.
John the Baptist manages to sum up most of the purpose of the Gospel of John: to see and to testify! This is the role of the faith-filled disciple. The fist scripture for today, also "Johannine," echoes a theme from the "Prologue" to the Gospel of John: "See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God." We have quite a "spiritual DNA!" For the next few days, the Letters and the Gospel of John will be echoing the tremendous truth that is spoken at the celebration of the Eucharist when the celebrant pours a bit of water into the wine at the offertory: "May we become partakers in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity!"
The gospel scripture today is concerned with distinguishing between John the Baptist and Jesus. The Letter of John, the first scripture, is concerned with distinguishing between God, the children of God and the "world." All of this is a product of profound reflection on the event of the Incarnation of Christ. This begins when we make the effort to understand the tremendous power that our baptism confers on us. We take the place of the angels and the star! WE see and testify that we are all invited to be children of God! As the old hymn puts it: "What wondrous love is this, O my soul!" AMEN
