Word to the Wise
Tuesday, March 26, 2013 - Holy Week - Tues
[Isa 49:1-6 and John 13:21-33, 36-38]Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times.
After reading through the gospel passage today, one may wonder if it was only Judas that Jesus was referring to when he said that one of the disciples at table with him would betray him! Of course, Judas is the one who takes the morsel of food and leaves. The evangelist adds the ominous words, "And it was night!" However, the conversaton goes on and Peter swears his loyalty only to be told that he too would be a betrayer! I doubt that very many of us would identify with Judas, but the same might not be true with regard to Peter. When confronted with a matter of what we believe and finding it very inconvenient to admit that belief, how many of us will deny that we know Jesus? This will become all the more dramatic on Good Friday when the Passion According to John is read.
At the moment, the stage is being set for what will happen after the supper is over and for what Jesus will be saying at the meal as well. If what Judas is doing fills us with indignation, we should remember Peter as well. It might be helpful to read the whole Last Supper account, beginning from the Washing of the Feet (Chap 13) and up to when the addresses are over. The apostles are not the only ones being prepared for what will happen. We are involved as well. Jesus says, "Amen, amen, I say to YOU!" AMEN
