"Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful!"
One of the most common faults I hear in the confessional is: "I was judgmental!" It is clear to me that folks are very aware of this one failing! Wouldn't it be a wonderful Lent if we could all eliminate "judgmentalism" from our list of faults?
The task is not an easy one! Our reactions to certain people and situations is so quick and automatic that we have "passed judgment" before we realize that is what we are doing! My father was a judge and a gavel was part of his official outfit. I tell folks to take their "judge's gavel" and bury it outside so that they have to go and dig it up before they can render judgment! When Jesus tells us to be merciful, he is giving us a virtue that is divine! Can we accept that gift and learn to be merciful instead of judgmental? A child once told me, "I should never have said that about her (an acquaintance ), I.don't know what is going on in her life!" That child's wisdom is worthy of our imitation! AMEN
