Word to the Wise
Saturday, October 25, 2014 - Saturday in the 29th Week in Ordinary Time
[Eph 4:7-16 and Luke 13:1-9]Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ, from whom the whole Body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning of each part, brings about the Body's growth and builds itself up in love. [Ephesians]
Did you ever have a minor infection that seemed to impact your whole body? Consider the lowly hangnail! One of those can impact the way one walks or writes! The coordinated efforts of the entire human body in everyday life serves as one of St. Paul's most profound images for describing the relationship between the members of the community and to Christ. It would be worthwhile to read, at this point, 1 Corinthians 12:12-26. "If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it...."
"Living the truth in love" is also an important notion of Paul's. Many are the disappointed persons who discover that they have given love to a lie! The promises of happiness that our consumer society offers is a good example. It is only by being truthful about ourselves to others that a real love can exist and grow and be part of the Body of Christ who is God's truth made flesh.
When we receive communion at the celebration of the Eucharist, we become what we receive if we receive it lovingly and truthfully - the Body of Christ. No one is more significant than anyone else in this except Christ. AMEN
