Word to the Wise
Thursday, January 22, 2015 - Thursday in the 2nd Week in Ordinary Time
[Heb 7:25—8:6 and Mark 3:7-12]Jesus is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them. [Hebrews]
JANUARY 22, [Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children]
In the United States this day is celebrated because it is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Rowe v. Wade that made abortion on demand possible. The issue has divided this country in ways not seen since the question of slavery. It is still being litigated as states and others find ways to stem the destruction of unborn children. It is not just those unborn children who are impacted. The parents, grandparents, and the whole human community is afflicted by this tragedy. As a priest I have heard many a tearful confession of someone connected with or who has undergone an abortion. Although the statistics seem to be abating somewhat, every abortion, even those caused by medical crisis, is a tragedy. Programs such as the "Rachel Program" exist to help mothers who have undergone an abortion. Other programs offer help to moms who are considering abortions.
The Letter to the Hebrews speaks of a "high priest" who knows our temptations and sorrows. Jesus lives forever to "make intercession" for us. I pray this intercession will have the power to curb the terrible act of abortion as well as the circumstances that compel women to seek to end the life of a child or change those men who force them to commit this act against the very nature of a mother. AMEN
