Word to the Wise
Saturday, May 23, 2015 - 7th Week of Easter - Sat morning
[Acts 28:16-20, 30-31 and John 21:20-25]There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the boks that would be written. [John]
Today the post-resurrection scriptures from Acts and the Gospel of John come to an end literally and liturgically. Acts mentions Paul preaching from "house arrest" in Rome for two years. The Gospel of John (appendix) mentions only that Jesus had separate plans for John that did not include Peter! We can play a kind of "Where are they now?" game. Tradition has it that both Peter and Paul were martyred in Rome during Nero's persecution in the mid-60's A.D.. Tradition also has it that John wound up in Ephesus with Jesus' mother, Mary, living in his house. That's about the best we can do.
Today is also the Vigil of Pentecost, which reminds us that while we venerate the great figures of Peter, Paul and John and other apostolic heros, the purpose of the Holy Spirit is to push us as well as them out of our enclosed rooms and out into the public to proclaim the Good News! It is the painful and messy process of giving birth to the Church. AMEN
