Word to the Wise
Thursday, May 28, 2015 - Thursday in the 8th Week in Ordinary Time
[Sir 42:15-25 and Mark 10:46-52]As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me." And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. [Mark]
Faith is where one finds it, and sometimes the finding is surprising. Notice that the blind man is only told that the person who has attracted a crowd is "Jesus of Nazareth." But Bartimaeus doesn't cry out, "Jesus of Nazareth!" He cries out, "Jesus, son of David!" This is an acknowledgment of Jesus that goes beyond ordinary acquaintance. His faith may even be stronger than that of the crowd which tries to silence him! They only change their mind when Jesus says, "Call him," and then they get very solicitous! His persistence pays off. Jesus asks him a simple but profound question: "What do you want me to do for you?" Bartimaeus responds in a profound way: "Master, I want to see."
Faith can lead to great consequences if we are willing to recognize Jesus and respond to his question, "What do you want me to do for you?" Bartimaeus had already begun to see in his faith. Can we say the same? AMEN
