Word to the Wise

[Gen 49:29-32; 50:15-26a and Matt 10:24-33]Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. [Matthew]
JULY 11 ST. BENEDICT, abbot
The task of living day to day without worrying about the next day, or week, or month, or year is not one I have ever found easy. It is a challenge that the Lord offers more than once. Back in the Sermon on the Mount, he said, "Do not worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for the day is the trouble thereof!" [Matt. 6:34]. Today Jesus uses the example of the sparrow to show God's providence. I find it reassuring to know that I'm worth "many sparrows," but the way a sparrow lives day to day is beyond me.
The one thing that Jesus says most often is "Do not be afraid." This is the challenge of God's providence. The Arabs have an old proverb, "Trust in Allah, but tie up your camel." I think I spend too much time worrying about that camel. Yet, that simple trust in God's providence is probably the secret to a more serene spirituality. The next time you see a sparrow, stop and watch! God's providence is at work. AMEN
