[ and ]FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2015 ST. AUGUSTINE, bishop and doctor of the Church. [1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 and Matthew 25:1-13] "For God did not call us to impurity but to holiness. Therefore, whoever disregards this, disregards not a human being but God, who also gives his Holy Spirit to you." St. Augustine could say that he had experienced both impurity and holiness! His was a life that began with brilliance and wantoness and ended in brilliance and holiness. Few individuals have had the influence he has had on the theology and teaching of the Catholic Church - particularly the western lung of the church. We celebrated the feast of his mother, St. Monica, yesterday, whose tears and prayers were rewarded by the dramatic conversion of her son, recounted in his CONFESSIONS. We Dominicans venerate St. Augustine because St. Dominic adopted the Rule of St. Augustine as the fundamental basis for our Dominican life. Augustine was a passionate man and everything he wrote seems to exude enthusiasm and faith. Much of his writing is not the sort of thing for casual reading, but I do recommend THE CONFESSIONS to get a good acquaintance. His teaching impacts Catholics and others every day.
