Word to the Wise
Tuesday, September 8, 2015 - Sept. 8 - The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
[Micah 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30 and Matt 1:1-16, 18-23 or 1:18-23,1259]TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2015 THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY [Micah 5:1-4a or Romans 8:28-30 and Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23] "We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose." [Romans] Mary did not just appear all of a sudden on earth. She was born like all regular humans to a set of parents. This means she had a birthday. The church chose this day and in the western church it has been celebrated since the 5th century. Since there is little in the New Testament about her background, imagination led to what are known as "apocryphal" gospels that gave us the names of her parents, Joachim and Anne. The alternative first scripture for today from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans pretty much captures Mary's role. Things do go well for those who love God and are called according to his purpose, but the "well" is not always according to our own human standards. Mary suffered in her role as the mother of Jesus. But now she is celebrated in so many different ways that almost anyone can find access to her! If you can find a copy of her traditional litany, with all its titles, this will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. The church says, "Happy Birthday!" to her today and we are all invited to the party. AMEN
