Word to the Wise
Saturday, October 3, 2015 - Saturday in the 26th Week in Ordinary Time
[Bar 4:5-12, 27-29 and Luke 10:17-24]SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2015 SATURDAY IN THE TWENTY-SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Baruch 4:5-12, 27-29 and Luke 10:17-24] "Let no one gloat over me, a widow, bereft of many: for the sins of my children, I am left desolate, for they turned from the law of God." [Baruch] One of the most frequent requests that I receive is from a parent or grandparent to pray for their children or grandchildren because they "don't go to church anymore." On more than one occasion I have had to warn zealous grandparents not to secretly baptize a grandchild! Nevertheless, it is a special spiritual worry for these parents and grandparents. "What did we do wrong?" There are many reasons - some of them rooted in the way the parents and grandparents lived out the faith in practice, some of them rooted in faulty catechetical programs in the church and some of them rooted in the secularistic/consumeristic culture of our society. A recent survey revealed that most people in the USA who leave the church, do so before their 23rd birthday! I promise the parents and grandparents I will pray, and I urge them to continue to give good example. In the meantime, the children and grandchildren will have to find their way back with God's help. Pope Francis' remarkable welcoming messages are having a great impact. One can only hope he lives longer and his successor will continue that welcoming message. The lament of the widow in the first scripture for today from Baruch can serve as a prayer for these parents and grandparents and it ends with a plea to return to God. AMEN
