Word to the Wise
Tuesday, October 20, 2015 - Tuesday in the 29th Week in Ordinary Time
[Rom 5:12, 15b, 17-19, 20b-21 and Luke 12:35-38]TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2015 TUESDAY IN THE TWENTY-NINTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Romans 5:12, 15B, 17-19, 20B-21 and Luke 12:35-38] "Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all men, inasmuch as all sinned. If by that one person's transgression the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many." [Romans] Another key insight in the Letter to the Romans is introduced this morning. If salvation is through faith and not through adherence to the Mosaic Law, which defined what was sinful and what was not, how does one explain sin apart from the Law? St. Paul sends us back to the very dawn of creation and the Garden of Eden. Adam becomes a central figure. It was Adam's transgression against God's command that demanded a "new Adam" to overcome that ancient curse. Christ is that "new Adam." It is by faith in Christ that we are freed from that ancient curse. Baptism is the gesture that expresses this. It is through Christ and his teachings that we know what is right and wrong, even if his teachings may contain important elements of the Mosaic Law: the Ten Commandments. Abraham and Adam become "types" for the person of faith who is at the same time "justus et peccator" (both sinner and saved). This is but a taste, but an important one, of the significance of the Letter to the Romans. Read on! AMEN Sent from my iPhone
