Word to the Wise
Saturday, November 7, 2015 - Saturday in the 31th Week in Ordinary Time
[Rom 16:3-9, 16, 22-27 and Luke 16:9-15]SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2015 ALL SAINTS OF THE ORDER OF PREACHERS [Romans 16:3-9, 16, 22-27 and Luke 16:9-15 Scriptures will vary at Dominican locations for this feast.] Now to him who can strengthen you, according to my Gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages but now manifested through the prophetic writings and, according to the command of the eternal God, made known to all nations to bring about the obedience of faith, to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ be glory forever and ever. Amen. [Romans] The proclamation of Jesus Christ is the goal and whole purpose of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). Today we celebrate all those members of the Order of Preachers whose example inspires us in our appointed task and charism of preaching. Some of them are canonized saints but others are known only by those who knew them personally. They are friars, cloistered nuns, apostolic sisters and laity. We celebrate them today with gratitude. Today, also, the Order of Preachers begins a year long celebration of the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the Order. The date of the papal document is December 22, 1216. This jubilee is meant to remind us of all those great men and women who followed in the footsteps of St. Dominic, and serves as a reminder of the constant need to preach the truth about Jesus Christ. Some of the Dominican saints were martyrs, some were scholars, some were cloistered nuns, some were itinerant preachers or pastors. They include St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Martin De Porres, St. Catherine of Siena, and Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati (OP Lay Person). Please pray for all of us and for me as I continue to preach out in West Texas and elsewhere during this year of Jubilee 800. AMEN
