Word to the Wise
Saturday, November 14, 2015 - Saturday in the 32th Week in Ordinary Time
[Wis 18:14-16; 19:6-9 and Luke 18:1-8]When peaceful stillness compassed everything, and the night in its swift course was half-spent, your all-powerful word from heaven's royal throne bounded... [Wisdom]
The chances are that you will see these words on a Christmas card at some point! Of course, the rest of the quote about a sharp sword will be judiciously edited away. In any case, the idea of God's intervention in human history is important and the approaching Advent and Christmas/Epiphany seasons will remind us of that. Wisdom takes the "Big Picture" approach, painting the broad strokes of the salvation narrative. Echoes of this can be found in the Prologue to the Gospel of John, "And the Word was made flesh and dwelled among us."
Human history is but a very small speck in the history of the universe, and "time" exists only for humans to measure before and after. But God has plans for creation that are greater than our plans. We know that we are precious because that "Word" came among us and died for us, but we are not in control of God or time. History helps us to stay rooted in our faith, and hope allows us to "let go and let God." AMEN
