Word to the Wise
Friday, December 4, 2015 - 1st Week of Advent - Fri
[Isa 29:17-24 and Matt 9:27-31]FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2015 FRIDAY IN THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT [Isaiah 29:17-24 and Matthew 9:27-31] On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book; and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. [Isaiah] The Gospel of Matthew was written for a community with many believers of Jewish background. Therefore it was important to portray Jesus as the fulfillment of the promises made in the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament). Even a very quick event like the one in today's gospel about the two blind men would invoke the promise made in the scripture from Isaiah in today's first scripture for the blind and deaf. We know from our own experience, however, that blindness and deafness are not only physical. They can be emotional and psychological and social. Other accounts of Jesus healing a blind person include disciples who are blind an deaf to the person calling out to Jesus for pity. Can we find such things in our own lives? Perhaps we could pray to have The Lord remove that blindness and deafness. This will allow us to become people who fulfill God's promises. What a gift that could be for this season in which all suffering seems magnified. AMEN
