Word to the Wise
Sunday, January 17, 2016 - 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time - C
[Isa 62:1-5; 1 Cor 12:4-11; John 2:1-11]SUNDAY, JANUARY 17, 2016 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME [Isaiah 62:1-5; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; John 2:1-11] "Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him." The story of the wedding feast at Cana is one the imagination can take and run with, even if the language of the text is vivid enough. First of all we can note that "the mother of Jesus" is mentioned before "Jesus and is disciples"! She also ignores her son's interesting reply (heavy with theology of his "hour") and tells the waiters to follow orders. We can imagine the embarrassment that might have been caused by running short of wine at a wedding! There was embarrassment enough when Jesus' wine is tasted and is found to be far superior. All of this is on the level of ordinary drama in which Jesus responds to his mother and the social situation. However, every "sign" in the Gospel of John has its purpose, and the text tells us that Jesus "revealed his glory" and "his disciples began to believe in him." This is the purpose of all of the "signs" - to reveal Jesus' glory. But it is only the first of the signs and the disciples only began to believe in him. The ultimate sign, his "hour," would come on the cross. Every good story has a good beginning, and the Marriage Feast at Cana is a great one. Read it again and again and its power begins to sink in, especially in the light of all that would come later. AMEN
