Word to the Wise
Monday, February 1, 2016 - Monday in the 4th Week in Ordinary Time
[2 Sam 15:13-14, 30; 16:5-13 and Mark 5:1-20]"Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you." [Mark]
Scripture scholars argue about the source of this story of the Gerasene demoniac. It has elements that don't match the general story of Jesus' ministry, especially the herd of pigs running into the sea! Be that as it may, the intent of the story demonstrates Jesus' power over evil spirits. It also shows that the spirits are powerful in that they know who Jesus truly is, which is something even the disciples were unsure of.
At the end, however, comes Jesus' charge to the man who has been released from his demons, quoted above. He is to announce what has happened. Perhaps we can find in our own lives something very important that we are pretty sure didn't occur because of anything we did, especially if it was a very hard and negative thing. Can we announce our release to others? Or do we keep this sort of thing a secret? Are we like the disciples, not so sure about this man, Jesus, and his power? AMEN
