Word to the Wise
Thursday, March 31, 2016 - Octave of Easter - Thurs
[Acts 3:11-26 and Luke 24:35-48]THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2016 THURSDAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF EASTER [Acts 3:11-26 and Luke 24:35-48] "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets must be fulfilled." [Luke] The gospel scripture today continues the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Just as they get back to Jerusalem and are recounting their experience, Jesus shows up! Luke describes their initial reaction as being "startled and terrified." One could hardly blame them. But ghosts don't eat, and Jesus demonstrates that he was no ghost. He is risen! Jesus then tells them essentially what he told those other two, and "opens their minds to understand the scriptures." There we find a challenge for ourselves. Jesus says the key to understanding him is to understand all that had been predicted (and later on preached) and written about him in the scriptures. We cannot divorce him from his Word. We are not only witnesses to the person of Jesus but proclaimers of what has been written about him. The Second Vatican Council, in the document on the Liturgy speaks of Christ being "truly present" in his Word. Our wonderful sacramental Catholic practices can have the effect of making us think that is all we need, and we don't have to read the Bible. This is tragic when it happens. Baptism should open our minds to God's Word. Our job is to see that the door stays open and that we are there to hear and understand. AMEN.
