Word to the Wise
Tuesday, June 14, 2016 - Tuesday in the 11th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Kgs 21:17-29 and Matt 5:43-48]TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 2016. TUESDAY IN THE ELEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [1 Kings 21:17-29 and Matthew 5:43-48] Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me out, my enemy?" "Yes," he answered. "Because you have given yourself up to doing evil in the Lord's sight, I am bringing evil upon you..." [1 Kings] The story of Ahab (assisted by his evil wife, Jezebel) and Naboth's vineyard began with the first scripture yesterday. It would be worth your time to go back and read forward. Then talk to any owner of a family farm or small family business about corporate greed. The big company moves in and says, "Sell us your business. We'll give you a good price. We're coming anyhow and if you don't sell to us now, we'll drive you out of business soon." It's an all too familiar scenario, played out in the Old Testament and in our own day. The powerful who just can't get enough power and possessions have been around a long time. When we label greed as "progress" and "efficiency" we blind ourselves to far more important values, or else we simply give faint lament to their loss as we see the next big box in our town or huge combine in our fields. The Book of Kings and the Sermon on the Mount are giving us many things to think about in the light of our faith. Are we thinking? AMEN
