Word to the Wise
Saturday, August 6, 2016 - Aug. 6 - The Transfiguration of the Lord
[Dan 7:9-10, 13-14; 2 Pet 1:16-19; A: Matt 17:1-9 B: Mark 9:2-10 C: Luke 9:28b-36,685]SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2016. THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD [Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; 2 Peter 1:16-19; Luke 9:28b-36] "And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem." [Luke] The place where the "transfiguration" is traditionally believed to have happened is a beautiful location that definitely helps one to meditate on this incident (especially after the harrowing ride up in a cab). But when all is said and done, we are left with a report of an extraordinary experience with Jesus that was not mentioned right away. The three evangelists who report it (Matthew, Mark and Luke) place it in conjunction with Jesus' predictions of his suffering and death. This can serve a catechetical purpose of showing us a savior both human and divine. It can also show us how humans can experience Jesus in person, even if we fall asleep during part of it! (Those same disciples would fall asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane, as well!) To gain the most of a reflection on this singular event, I recommend reading all three accounts and see where this evangelical testimony takes you. The words I quoted above show an interpretation that is profound, but they do not appear in all three reports. This alone is worth the time to consider. The "transfiguration" remains an inviting mystery. AMEN
