Word to the Wise
Monday, August 22, 2016 - Aug. 22 - The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
[Isa 9:1-6 and Luke 1:26-38]We always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in him, in accord with the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ. [2 Thess]
MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 2016 QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MAY
[Isaiah 9:1-6 and Luke 1:26-38. These scriptures are proper to the feast. The weekday scriptures are 2 Thess. 1:1-5, 11-12 and Matthew 23:13-22]
While there are scriptures assigned for this day where it is more than a regular "memorial," I find the words of St. Paul in 2 Thessalonians do an adequate job of describing Mary's role in God's plan. Monarchical ideas seem a bit out of place in our culture, even if we use them for festivals. Mary's role is intercessory, as we proclaim in every "Hail Mary," because she "blessed among women," but we also, in keeping with St. Paul's prayer, proclaim, "blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus" and that keeps the order of things where it must be. At least I seek her help to be worthy of my calling to accomplish my ministry. Everyone has their own image of Mary, as I noted on the feast of the Assumption in regard to all the national images at the basilica in Nazareth. If regal trappings and crowns suit one's faith and piety, so be it! I find the Jewish mother from Nazareth who can't do enough for me more sympathetic!
Today marks the 13th anniversary of THE WORD TO THE WISE. On this date in 2003, I wrote and sent the first WTTW to a few friends by e-mail. In 2005, my dear friends, Craig and Christina Baker, gifted me with the website where WTTW is posted each day, and now it manages to get all over the place. Mary has seen to it that I do it every day since then. She can be insistent! That's a Jewish mom for you! AMEN
