Word to the Wise
Saturday, September 17, 2016 - Saturday in the 24th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Cor 15:35-37, 42-49 and Luke 8:4-15]SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2016. SATURDAY IN THE TWENTY-FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [1 Corinthians 15;35-37, 42-49 and Luke 8:4-15] "But as for the seed that fell on rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have heard the word, embrace it with a generous heart, and bear fruit through perseverance." [Luke] I like to garden. My itinerant ministry presents a challenge to this liking. It's hard to be a "nomad" and raise a crop of something. I often liken my itinerant preaching to the legendary Johnny Appleseed who wandered everywhere sowing the seeds for apple trees. Like him, I don't always see the fruits of my labor. Jesus' image of the seed falling into various situations which make it difficult for the seed to come to full fruition is helpful. His parable is meant to comfort preachers who get frustrated by the uneven response they receive. Sometimes the task is not so much sowing seed but removing the weeds that grow up and threaten to choke the crop. Parents can find meaning in this parable as well. They can get the "crop" going but nurturing seems often to be a process of pulling weeds instead of harvesting. What must be done, however, no matter what, is the sowing. There are many challenges ahead but we have to preach the gospel and do what we can to help it grow. We do our part and God takes care of the rest. AMEN
