Word to the Wise

[Eph 1:15-23 and Luke 12:8-12]FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2016 ST. TERESA OF JESUS [AVILA] [Ephesians 1:15-23 and Luke 12:8-12] "May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe....." [Ephesians] The Letter to the Ephesians definitely has a poetic side in it, as I remarked yesterday. Today's passage contains the words quoted above (again, read it all together) with the words, "the eyes of your hearts" and "riches of glory." No doubt the author (St. Paul or one of his disciples) is trying to get the reader to appreciate more deeply the meaning and content of our faith in Christ. There is something important here. We can be experts in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and still not really understand or grasp the majesty and beauty of the vision offered to us, as described in this passage. I am reminded of the lines from, I think, AUNTIE MAME, "Life's a smorgasbord..and half the .....are starving to death." This is one reason why it is so important to do our liturgical celebrations well, so that we gain a deeper appreciation of the depth and beauty of our faith. Our brothers and sisters of the Eastern rites make a point of this, even if to our eyes they are a bit too elaborate and in their eyes we are a bit empoverished! St. TERESA of Avila, whose feast is today, saw deeply into the faith. We cannot all be great mystics like her, but we can "open the eyes of our hearts" to more than just being present and leaving after communion! AMEN
