Word to the Wise

[Eph 2:1-10 and Luke 12:13-21]MONDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2016 ST. IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH [Ephesians 2:1-10 and Luke 12:13-21) "But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whine will they belong?' Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God." [Luke] Beneath all the horrors of the current election rhetoric there is a powerful theme: security. Candidates appeal to the concerns that voters have about national and personal security. Will so-and-so keep the country safe and give me personal security in health and income? For some, it is a matter of getting more security. For others it is a matter of survival. In today's gospel scripture, Jesus says, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions." The rich fool in Jesus' parable is foolish because he does not share his wealth but hoards it. His worry is about his security. He does not realize that like everyone else, he has only one life and instead of doing good with it, he tries vainly to keep death at bay buy piling up his wealth around him. His notion of security was a false one. It is known that our nation produces more than enough resources to give all its population a decent standard of living, but that is not how these resources are distributed. "Security" of that kind could be accomplished if greed were conquered. That still leaves us with the realization, however, that our only ultimate security is in God. How we go about seeking any other security will tell us a lot about our relationship to God. The one thing we don't want to be is a rich fool. AMEN
