Word to the Wise
Thursday, October 20, 2016 - Thursday in the 29th Week in Ordinary Time
[Eph 3:14-21 and Luke 12:49-53]I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. [Ephesians]
It is difficult with all the cares and concerns that face us in daily life to think profound and immense thoughts about our faith very often. We can be satisfied with the simple prayer that will get us through the day. Yet, to each of us, a tremendous resource is available, of incredible richness. Without even moving from our chair, we can invoke God's universal loving presence. Our minds and hearts can be, as the prayer from Ephesians says, "filled with all the fullness of God."
Out here in West Texas where I live, the sky and the plains give an impression of vastness with distant horizons. When I drive from here in any direction I feel like I'm in a small boat on the ocean. But one may have that sensation in the Rocky Mountains or in looking on the Mississippi River as it flows through the delta region. One may sense the power of God's presence when a new life is born or a life gently leaves our presence to be with God.
All of this is possible even in a very few minutes if we are willing to stop and listen attentively to the presence of God, and experience the love expressed in the person of Jesus and realize how the Spirit can guide us through the frantic day. Even in this vast reality, we are not insignificant specks but beloved Children of God. The Letter to the Ephesians gives us a prayer to help us with this. AMEN
