Word to the Wise
Wednesday, November 30, 2016 - Nov. 30 - St. Andrew, Apostle
[Rom 10:9-18 and Matt 4:18-22]WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2016 ST. ANDREW, apostle [Romans 10:9-18 and Matthew 4:18-22] But how can they call on him in while they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? [Romans] The word, "apostle," comes from a Greek word meaning someone who is "sent" as a messenger of some kind. St. Paul's wonderful words today resonate strongly in all Dominicans because our official title is the "Order of Preachers." The gospel scripture today for the feast of St. Andrew recounts the "call" of Peter and Andrew by Jesus on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus would later send them out to preach and heal. After Pentecost, they would go further. (Both Greece and Scotland make a claim on Andrew!). The rest is history. The little group of frightened apostles and other disciples would become the Christian church. Everyone of us who are baptized have been "called" and "sent." We may not think of ourselves in that way, but it's still true. Pope Francis continually challenges us to be "missionaries of mercy." If we preach at an official church ceremony, that may require some commission, but for the rest of things, all we need is our faith and voice and behavior. There are millions of people waiting for us. They need preachers. We have been sent. It may be next door or around the world. Where would you like to go? Greece? Scotland? AMEN
