Word to the Wise
Saturday, December 31, 2016 - Dec. 31 - 7th Day in the Octave of Christmas
[1 John 2:18-21 and John 1:1-18]SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2016 SEVENTH DAY IN THE OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS [1 John 2:18-21 and John 1:1-18] And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only-begotten Son, full of grace and truth... From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace....[John] It would be hard to find words of greater majesty and profound significance than the "Prologue" to the Gospel of John. These words encompass the entire life of Jesus and its meaning, yet the simple line "the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.." Helps us to focus on the particular season and "the reason for the season." The liturgical season of Christmas/Epiphany is not over yet. Sure, you can put the tree and the wrappings out to be picked up, but don't put the manger scene away. Despite common practice, the Magi are not celebrated until Epiphany, and that will be January 8th! It is ever a wonder to me that we do not take down the crucifix after Easter, but we put away the manger scene as soon as possible. "The Word became flesh" is at the center of our faith. We receive that child at Eucharist. We manifest that child in our acts of mercy. We proclaim the resurrection of that child at Easter. Every parent has the experience of seeing the child grow up but can still see the child in the adult offspring. We have received the fullness of Christ. I pray we can see him as that child in one another in this season and on. AMEN
