Word to the Wise
Saturday, January 7, 2017 - Jan. 7 (if Epiphany is Jan. 8)
[1 John 5:14-21 and John 2:1-11]SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 2017 ST. RAYMOND OF PENAFORT, O.P. [1 John 5:14-21 and John 2:1-11] Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. [John] In the season of Christmas/Epiphany, the scriptural emphasis is on "revelation." The "come and see" theme is strong and reaches a climax tomorrow with the feast of the Epiphany (the coming of the Magi) which our brothers and sisters of the Eastern rites celebrate as their liturgical Christmas. In the "Prologue" to the Gospel of John, which is read at "Mass During the Day, we read the words: "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw his glory!" The gospel scripture for today is also from the Gospel of John - the first of Jesus' "signs" at the marriage feast at Cana. By changing water into wine he "revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him." Seeing the glory of Christ and believing in him is the mark of the disciple in the Gospel of John. It is a good question to ask ourselves. Even if we have already put away the Magi with the rest of the manger scene, they will make their appearance this Sunday. They came seeking the glory revealed by the star. Where do we find the glory of Christ dwelling in our midst? AMEN
