Word to the Wise
Wednesday, March 8, 2017 - 1st Week of Lent - Wed
[Jonah 3:1-10 and Luke 11:29-32]WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 2017 WEDNESDAY IN THE FIRST WEEK OF LENT [Jonah 3:1-10 and Luke 11:29-32] "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah." [Luke] The story of Jonah ranks with any of the best known stories in the Bible. This is especially true of his encounter with the "whale." But, there are other elements of the story that are worthy of attention: Jonah's attempt to run away from God (unsuccessful) and his complaint that God didn't destroy Nineveh. Jesus cites Jonah's preaching for its success in getting Nineveh to repent as a sign to future generations to repent or face destruction. In the Gospel According to Matthew, Jesus also cites the three days in the belly of the whale as a sign of his death and resurrection. Mt. 12:40 By virtue of our baptism, we are called to witness to God's message in Jesus. Do we try to run away from this call like Jonah? When God does not act the way we want, do we pout like petulant children, as Jonah did? Jonah has the distinction of being the only prophet who had great success in getting people to listen. Are we afraid no one will listen to us if we speak God's message? Indeed, have we heard Jesus' message ourselves and repented? Jesus and Jonah are talking to us. Are we listening? AMEN
