Word to the Wise
Monday, March 13, 2017 - 2nd Week of Lent - Mon
[Dan 9:4b-10 and Luke 6:36-38]MONDAY, MARCH 13, 2017 MONDAY IN THE SECOND WEEK OF LENT [Daniel 9:4b-10 and Luke 6:36-38] "Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and good gifts will be given to you; a. Good measure packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you." [Luke] I have been proposing a three-fold packet of questions as a way of observing Lent. What do I need to start doing? What do I need to stop doing? What do I need to keep on doing? The Gospel According to Luke offers a sample today. Jesus challenges us to STOP judging. He challenges us to START forgiving. And he both challenges and encourages in regard to generosity [KEEP ON]. Judging and condemning others is one of the most common sins I hear in the sacrament of Reconciliation. There must be millions, even billions, of "gavels" in the world raining down judgments! This fault is a hard one to root out, but a Lent in which we at least reduce it is a good start. [STOP] Forgiveness is also one of the most difficult things we can do as a Christian, but if we claim to love at all, we must forgive others. A Lent in which we come to terms with unforgiveness would be a great achievement. [START]. The "rice bowl" boxes and other donation opportunities to give food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, clothing to the naked, etc. are always before us at our parish church. If we respond in Lent, why not KEEP ON responding when Lent is over? The words from Jesus about generosity in today's gospel can serve as an inspiration. AMEN
