Word to the Wise
Saturday, April 1, 2017 - 4th Week of Lent - Sat
[Jer 11:18-20 and John 7:40-53]SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 2017 SATURDAY IN THE FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Jeremiah 11:18-20 and John 7:40-53] So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why did you not bring him?" The guards answered, "Never before has anyone spoken like this one." [John] The chief priests and Pharisees are infuriated. They sent guards to arrest Jesus and the guards found themselves captivated. What's more some of their own number were beginning to believe. Nicodemus makes an effort to speak up, but he is shouted down on the grounds of Jesus' origins in Galilee! The plotting will continue, however. The first scripture from Jeremiah was seen by the early community as a foretelling of the fate of Jesus at the hands of religious authorities. Lent is a good time to examine our expectations that are founded on the way we express our faith. If we are convinced that nothing good can come from Nazareth [John 1:46], that may keep us from seeing the good that does. This may all be summed up in what has been called "the seven last words of the Church:" "We've never done it that way before." Jesus represented something completely different, as the guards discovered, but "different" was anathema to the chief priests and Pharisees. What are our own expectations in regard to Jesus? Have we "domesticated" him to where he is no longer a challenge? AMEN
