Word to the Wise
Friday, June 16, 2017 - Friday in the 10th Week in Ordinary Time
[2 Cor 4:7-15 and Matt 5:27-32]We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. [2 Cor.]
The gospel scriptures this past week have been from the Sermon on the Mount, but the first scriptures have been taken from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians. This is one of Paul's most personal communications. His faith and determination come through in wonderful ways. His suffering and trials are amazing. Read the lists in chapters 6 an 10! I urge the Beloved Congregation to read the whole letter so that the fracturing of it for liturgical purposes doesn't destroy its power.
Today's image is one that has captured attention often in song and poetry. Pottery and earthen vessels were everyday things for biblical folks. Jeremiah is famous for his image of the potter and clay in the hands of God. [Jer. 18:6]. Paul is referring to his own understanding as an instrument of the gospel. It is the message that counts, not the messenger. That's true, but messengers are necessary. I am frequently amazed at the impact of some of my parish mission services and can only believe that it is the Holy Spirit that accomplishes this. The travels and challenges I meet at various churches remind me just how earthen a vessel I am!
When we are challenged to be missionaries of mercy by Pope Francis, we may be tempted to say, "Who? Me?" We are all earthen vessels, but what we contain in faith is precious and meant to be shared. Pour it out! AMEN
