Word to the Wise
Monday, July 3, 2017 - July 3 - St. Thomas, Apostle
[Eph 2:19-22 and John 20:24-29]MONDAY, JULY 3, 2017. ST. THOMAS, apostle [Ephesians 2:19-22 and John 20:24-29] "Put your finer here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe." Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed." [John] We are all indebted to Thomas for his act of faith: "My Lord and my God!" But it was not easy for him to get to that point. HIs natural skepticism got in the way. It didn't matter that the other disciples had "seen the Lord." If he was to believe, he had to have his own experience. He would have agreed with the expression, "Seeing is believing." And he got his wish, but Jesus praises those who do not need to be convinced by physical signs but who can "see" with the eyes of faith. [Go back and read in chapter nine the story of the Man Born Blind.] Most of us see Jesus with the eyes of faith. It is a faith that has been handed down from the first disciples who "saw the Lord." It is their testimony on which our Church stands. We profess in the creeds a faith which, as the first scripture of today from Ephesians says, makes us members of the "household of God." If we want to touch the wounds of Christ, there are many examples in the human-made tragedies of war, violence, hunger and homelessness which present themselves every day. The face of Christ may stand next to us on a bus. It is with the eyes of faith that we see him there. We celebrate Thomas today for giving us the reminder of all of this. AMEN
