Word to the Wise
Thursday, August 31, 2017 - Thursday in the 21th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Thess 3:7-13 and Matt 24:42-51]THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 10`7. THURSDAY IN THE TWENTY-FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME Now may God himself, our Father, and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you, and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we have for you, so as to strengthen your hearts, to be blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones. [1 Thessalonians] One of the bits of advice that I sometimes give in the Sacrament of Reconciliation is in the form of a question. I call it the "portable question" because one may take it anywhere one is living. The question is: "Am I living the way I want people to remember me?" This could be also modified to add God, too! I find this question to be particularly helpful to university students, but with others as well. St. Paul's admonitions to his community in Thessalonica could be directed to us in our own day. Are we living the way we want people to remember us. If the love that Christ commands us to show for one another is to spread, other people have to experience it so that they can remember it. The gospel scripture for today speaks of being held accountable for our lives at the end of time. The law by which we will be judged is the law of love for all, from least to greatest, but particularly for those who are hurting. [Matt. 25:31-45]. How will we be remembered in this regard? It's our portable question. AMEN
