Word to the Wise
Tuesday, September 5, 2017 - Tuesday in the 22th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Thess 5:1-6, 9-11 and Luke 4:31-37]TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2017. TUESDAY IN THE TWENTY-SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [1 Thessalonians 5:1-6, 9-11 and Luke 4:31-37] In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One of God!" [Luke] The scene in today's gospel scripture follows on the rejection Jesus experienced in Nazareth from his own hometown people. He settles in another village close to the Sea of Galilee, called Capernaum. Here we are confronted with an interesting irony. Jesus' own kin and people do not recognize him, but an unclean demon does! The people in Capernaum are astonished by his teaching and by his power over the demons, but still there is no faith. It will take awhile before faith comes to fruition. What is it that draws any of us to believe in Jesus as "the Holy One of God?" Has it been the faith of other people whom we love and respect? Is it through reading the scriptures and learning his teachings or seeing his power? Is it because of a crisis of some kind in our lives? Why can we say about Jesus, "I know who you are - the Holy One of God!" ? AMEN
