Word to the Wise
Thursday, September 7, 2017 - Thursday in the 22th Week in Ordinary Time
[Col 1:9-14 and Luke 5:1-11]THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2017. THURSDAY IN THE TWENTY-SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Colossians 1:9-14 and Luke 5:1-11] "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch." [Luke] One of the qualities of the Gospel According to Luke that I appreciate most is the vividness of his accounts. I have visited the location that tradition assigns to the event in today's gospel scripture in which Jesus preaches from Peter's boat and then repays him with a huge catch of fish, along with a call to follow Jesus. However, one is left wondering what happened to all those fish? "Put out into the deep..." Is really the command to evangelize. This may mean sharing one's faith with a stranger or with co-workers or family. That sharing is not always an explicit verbal statement, but could be simply living the faith intentionally and openly. There have always been little ways such as a rosary hanging from the rear-view mirror in the car, or saying grace before eating lunch in the company cafeteria. Eventually someone may say, "Why do you do that?" The "deep" is very large and we do not always know what (or who) is going to show up in the net. But we have the Lord's assurance, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." It may cost us a load of fish, but the rewards are great. AMEN
