Word to the Wise
Tuesday, October 10, 2017 - Tuesday in the 27th Week in Ordinary Time
[Jonah 3:1-10 and Luke 10:38-42]TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2017 TUESDAY IN THE TWENTY-SEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Jonah 3:1-10 and Luke 10:38-42] "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." [Luke] The scene at the home of Martha and Mary presents a contrast from the powerful story of the Good Samaritan and its challenge, "Go and do likewise." Yet, the energy and strength to meet that challenge will come from what Mary is doing. I have just completed preaching a retreat for the priests of the diocese of Tucson. In that retreat, I challenged them to ask themselves four questions: How am I praying? How am I learning? How am I loving? How am I serving? The quality of their (and our) service is going to depend on the responses to the first three questions. At the end of consideration of each of those four questions, I challenged them to ask: What do I need to START doing? What do I need to STOP doing? What do I need to KEEP ON doing? In the gospel scene today, Martha is challenged to stop worrying and start listening to Jesus. It seems clear that she will always be finding a way to serve! Perhaps some of my Beloved Congregation will find those questions helpful? AMEN
