Word to the Wise
Thursday, October 12, 2017 - Thursday in the 27th Week in Ordinary Time
[Mal 3:13-20b and Luke 11:5-13]THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2017. THURSDAY IN THE TWENTY-SEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Malachi 3:13-20b and Luke 11:5-13] "And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened...." [Luke] These words from the Gospel According to Luke pose a problem of faith for many people. I often hear in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, "I wish I prayed more! Or, "I wish I could trust God more?" Or "I've been praying for years for.........and nothing has 'happened.'" All I can say is, "Keep praying!" This is not so as to achieve a particular result, although that may be the subject of a prayer, but rather to keep the lines of communication open! Psychologists will tell parents who have problems with their children to keep communicating no matter what happens. That is the substance of what the Gospel of Luke is telling us. I don't mean that God is a troublesome offspring, but if we want to grow in faith and trust, prayer is the expression of that faith and trust. Shutting down communication because God doesn't do what we want God to do is childish. The preposition is important: praying TO, praying FOR, praying WITH..... All of these are necessary. Then we have to trust God, and THAT can be a challenge. The Gospel According to Luke suggests that we can actually wear down God, but that can only happen if we persevere! AMEN
