Word to the Wise
Tuesday, October 17, 2017 - Tuesday in the 28th Week in Ordinary Time
[Rom 1:16-25 and Luke 11:37-41]The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them. Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. As a result, they have no excuse; for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened. While claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an image of mortal man or birds or of four-legged animals or of snakes. [Romans]
OCTOBER 17 ST. IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH
St. Paul comes out with strong words about the religious situation of his time, with all kinds of idolatry available in the Mediterranean region. In Rome, the image of the emperor would have been accorded public worship and there were cults of all kinds from around the Roman empire. Paul wrote to the Jewish community in Rome, which would have been well aware of all of this. There are words, however, that should give us something to consider: For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them. Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made.
The grand scale of creation and the wonder of the human body and personality are incredibly revealing things. Evolution may be the means by which all of this has developed, but God's ways of creation are revealed in such things. One of the Psalms says, "He counts the number of the stars and calls each one by name!" When I visit Arizona and see the night sky out there, I can only wonder. When I visit the Oregon coast and see the Pacific Ocean, I can again only wonder. I'm sure many of the Beloved Congregation have had similar experiences. The complexity of the human body, which becomes better and better known with new discoveries almost daily, is like entering a whole universe. Yes, God has made and continues to make God's power and divinity known to us. We have only to open our eyes and ears and pay attention. AMEN
