Word to the Wise
Tuesday, November 7, 2017 - Tuesday in the 31th Week in Ordinary Time
[Rom 12:5-16ab and Luke 14:15-24]TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2017 ALL SAINTS OF THE DOMINICAN ORDER [Romans 12:5-16a and Luke 14:15-24. These scriptures will be different at Dominican locations.] We, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them: if prophecy, in proportion to the faith; if ministry, in ministering; if one is a teacher, in teaching; if one exhorts, in exhortation; if one contributes, in generosity; if one is over others, with diligence; of one does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. [Romans] We Dominicans celebrate our own "All Saints Day" in addition to the one on November 1st. The list is grown considerably since I entered the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 1964, thanks to Pope St. John Paul II. So, now I'm not sure how many there are, whereas once I could pretty much name all the ones who had been canonized. If we take St. Paul's list in the quote above, I could pretty much name an example from each category. They do range from the well-known like St. Dominic, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Rose of Lima, St. Martin De Porres and St. Thomas Aquinas to the less well-known, even among Dominicans: St. Francis Coll-Guitart, St. Juan Macias, St. Lawrence Ruiz, Bl.? Peter Higgins, etc. Every Dominican, whether friar, sister, nun or lay will be able to find a companion in the group. The idea, of course, for all of us is to join them somehow, even if not by official recognition. Certainly I have known a good many who were holy enough and compassionate enough in this life to qualify. That is really the point, isn't it? We are called to make holiness possible through our own lives lived in accord with the gospel. This might be our Dominican feast day, but we invite the world to join us in rejoicing today. AMEN
