Word to the Wise
Saturday, February 3, 2018 - Saturday in the 4th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Kgs 3:4-13 and Mark 6:30-34]SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2018 SATURDAY IN THE FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [1 Kings 3:4-13 and Mark 6:30-34] The Apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, "Come away to a deserted place and rest awhile." People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. [Mark] This weekend I am preaching a retreat for Permanent Deacons and their spouses. This is one of my major ministries, and I get to meet quite a few Permanent Deacons around the country. I also preach retreats for priests and sisters. The quote from Jesus about coming apart to a deserted place to rest awhile is an important one. My experience with these retreats is that many people in full time ministry are so busy taking care of others that they do not take care of themselves and their effectiveness is reduced by exhaustion or ill health. Some of them come to the retreat only because it is required by church law or by the diocese or congregation. This makes me do my best to provide a good experience. An annual retreat either alone or with others is something I recommend to everyone. Our faith needs that boost. It may seem like a luxury to families or individuals with hectic schedules, but once one gets into the habit of making a retreat each year, it becomes an event early awaited. I've known spouses to present one another a retreat as a gift. Even if the retreat is only for a day, it's worthwhile. The retreat I am preaching this weekend will focus on good spiritual, emotional and physical "hygiene." A retreat is part of that hygiene. Consider the possibility for yourself and your family or friends. AMEN
