Word to the Wise
Sunday, March 4, 2018 - 3rd Sunday of Lent - B
[Exod 20:1-17 or 20:1-3, 7-8, 12-17; 1 Cor 1:22-25; John 2:13-25]SUNDAY, MARCH 4, 2018. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT [Exodus 20:1-17; 1 Corinthians 1:22-25; John 2:13-25. These are the scriptures for Year B. In parishes with RCIA programs, the scriptures may be taken from Year A.] Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. [1 Corinthians] This weekend, I begin my third of three parish missions in South Florida. The theme of this one is taken from the second scripture for today, CHRIST, THE POWER AND WISDOM OF GOD. This is what St. Paul proclaimed, and it is what we who are baptized are called to proclaim. This message was a stumbling block to Jews because no human, especially one who was crucified, could possibly be divine. It was foolishness to the Greeks (Gentiles) because it simply did not fit into their philosophical systems. [Acts 17:22-33], especially the idea of resurrection from the dead. But we who are baptized in Christ are called to proclaim both the cross and resurrection, just as St. Paul was. This ministry requires us to be people of prayer, united by our common faith. It requires us to know the scriptures. [cf. today's gospel about the disciples believing in the scriptures after Jesus' death and resurrection.]. It requires us to proclaim this message with love for all God's children, and to do it in acts of service. This is the power and wisdom of God, and every one of us can proclaim it with God's help. AMEN
