Word to the Wise
Thursday, March 8, 2018 - 3rd Week of Lent - Thurs
[Jer 7:23-28 and Luke 11:14-23]THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2018 - THURSDAY IN THE THIRD WEEK OF LENT [Jeremiah 7:23-28 and Luke 11:14-23] Thus says the Lord: This is what I commanded my people: Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper. [Jeremiah] The passage from Jeremiah is about the history of God's commands and the ups and downs of the response of God's people. As God points out in the time of Jeremiah, the people had stopped listening to God or prophets and went their own ways. "Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is banished from their speech." Jeremiah's report of God's message is quite contemporary. Our secular society continually nibbles at the edge of our faith and sometimes goes right to its core. To remain faithful in the face of a way of life that exalts power and consumerism as supreme values is a great challenge. We Catholics have plenty of prophetic voices around us from Pope to pew that remind us of what life in Christ is about. We also have secular institutions that exalt individualism to the point that human life becomes cheap from womb to tomb. Faithfulness to Christ is not to be confused with healthy patriotism. Christianity has survived all kinds of governments, including the democratic Greeks, Romans and dictators of all sorts. It will survive the U.S.A.. Our first task is to ask what God is asking of us and see everything else in the light of that. Jeremiah has something to say to us. Are we listening? AMEN
