Word to the Wise
Sunday, May 13, 2018 - Ascension of the Lord - B
[Acts 1:1-11; opt: Eph 4:1-13 or 4:1-7, 11-13; Mark 16:15-20]SUNDAY, MAY 13, 2018. THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD [Acts 1:1-11; Ephesians 1:17-23 or 4:1-13; Mark 16:15-20] “Go out into the whole world ad proclaim the gospel to every creature.....[B]ut they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.” [Mark] Every good story has to have an “end,” right? When parents read a story to their children, no doubt there is a sense of relief to be able to say, “The end!” But when it comes to telling the story about Jesus, there really is no “end.” The accounts of the “ascension” of Jesus in Acts and Mark speak of Jesus being “lifted up” and “taken up”. But we know that Pentecost is just around the corner and the disciples are only just beginning to tell the story. The New Testament is one big effort of many people to tell the story of Jesus, and we continue that story. So, there is no “The End.” Once Jesus had died and risen, his “presence” changed but not his message or identity. He continues to be the One whom God has sent, and as his followers WE are sent as well. So wondering about how Jesus ascended doesn’t he the job done, as the Angels seemed to say to the wondering disciples! The Ascension of the Lord doesn’t really end anything. As the popular song put it, “We’ve only just begun!” AMEN
